Alice Athey, age 88, of San Francisco, California, died Monday, October 24, 2005, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 26th at the Aurora Cemetery. Pastor Wayne Oblender will officiate. No Visitation. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at higbymortuary.com.
OBITUARY: ALICE ATHEY
Alice Marie Athey, the daughter of George and Ruth (Sundberg) Akerson, was born on a farm northwest of Aurora, Nebraska on February 16, 1917 and died in Aurora, Nebraska on October 24, 2005, at the age of 88.
She attended country school and graduated from Aurora High School in 1933. Alice graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. She taught country school northwest of Aurora and at Battle Creek, Nebraska.
Alice was united in marriage to Verl Athey in December 1941 at Reno, Nevada. They lived in various places as her husband was in the Air Force. Verl passed away in an airplane crash at Seoul, Korea in June 1953. Alice worked for the Social Security Administration in Boston, Massachusetts, Denver, Colorado and San Francisco, California. Alice moved to Hamilton Manor in 2004.
Alice was a world traveler and had been around the world seven times and all over Europe many times. She loved football and golf and attended all the 49-er games in San Francisco. Alice was a member of the Christian Church, where she had been baptized in 1929.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two brothers, Willis and Wilbur Akerson, and a sister-in-law, Doris Akerson.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, including Ron and Marsha Akerson and Scott Athey of Aurora; sister-in-law, Nelda Akerson of Aurora; grand nephews and nieces, Steve (Lauren) Akerson and Julie (Casey) Steele and Carmen Akerson and other nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
