Bob Asher, age 72, of Aurora, former owner of the Aurora Red & White Grocery, died suddenly at his home in Aurora, on Saturday morning, April 28, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday afternoon, at the Aurora United Methodist Church. Dr. Joe Scahill will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M., Monday evening at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 P.M. at the mortuary. Asher, the son of Neil and Freida (Fuelberth) Asher, was born at Page, Nebraska, on June 2, 1928, and died at his home in Aurora, Nebraska on April 28, 2001, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 26 days. He grew up and attended country school near Page, and when his older brothers left to serve in World War II, he quit school to help his father farm. On August 27, 1949, he was united in marriage to Shirley Appleby at Inman, Nebraska. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1993. After their marriage Bob started working in the grocery business in stores at O'Neill, Rapid City, South Dakota, Alliance, Winner, South Dakota, and Aurora. He sold the store in Aurora, and retired in 1988, and after his retirement he enjoyed working on his small farm. Bob was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church, had belonged to the Winner Fire Department and Winner Elks Club, was a member of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, the Aurora Rotary Club and the Aurora Country Club. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, card playing, building, repairing and restoring machinery and annual outings to Branson, Missouri. He loved spending time with his family and friends at their lakeside cabin. He and his wife Shirley hosted the annual "Asher Open Golf Tournament" at their cabin each June, a tradition he continued after her death. His warm hospitality attracted a wide circle of friends and family to a weekend of golf, music, dancing, food and fun for a quarter of a century. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Shirley. Those who remain to cherish his memory are his 3 sons, Terry and his wife Kathryn of Des Moines, Iowa, Randy and his wife Shari of Aurora, and Mark of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; 3 daughters, Jan Dick and her husband Ed, and Mardell Jasnowski and her husband John all of Aurora; and Sandi Sweeney and her husband Doug of Grand Island; 5 brothers, Ben, Harold, and Jerry of Page, and Dick of Powell, Wyoming, and Kenneth of Atkinson; 2 sisters, Lillie Kemper of O'Neill, and Helen Snoeck of West Lake Village, California; 12 Grandchildren, Sara, Chelsie, Sophie, Erin, Katie, Shane, Evan, Emily, Jamie, Alexandra, Myles, and Shannon, and one great-granddaughter, Madison; and a special friend Joyce Heath.
