OBITUARY: ALICE ARNETT
Alice Bernice ("Bernie") Arnett, the daughter of Will D. and Martha J. (England) Manka, was born in Hamilton County, Nebraska, on April 24, 1918, and died in Grand Island, Nebraska, on October 27, 2005, at the age of 87.
After her mother passed away in 1926, Bernie worked the family farm with her brother, Edwin, and her father; she also performed all the household chores for the family. Bernie graduated from Phillips High School in 1936.
Bernie married Leland Herbert Arnett on July 5, 1941, in Grand Island. Along with her father and brother, she continued to work the family farm while Leland served in World War II, and alongside her husband after he returned home from the war. After Leland passed away on February 8, 1967, Bernie became the head cook at Jake's Bake Shop. She later served in the same capacity at Kemling's Steakhouse and the Hub, until she retired in 1995 at the age of 78.
Bernie was a former member of the Phillips Methodist Church and served on the Phillips Cemetery Board; she also belonged to the Kensington and BB Clubs. She enjoyed vacationing with her family in Hawaii, and loved the trips she took to Tennessee to visit her cousin, Eldred DeVore. Bernie's favorite television show was Jeopardy!, which she watched religiously. Her other passions were Cornhusker football, doing the daily crossword puzzle, and gardening. She was also often seen out mowing the grass on her riding lawnmower. Bernie especially loved her kitty, Susie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers Edwin, who passed away in 1976, Kenneth and Keith, who both died in infancy; son-in-law, Ted Roberts in 1991 and daughter-in-law, Brenda Arnett in 1998.
Those left to cherish her memory are her two children, Elaine B. Roberts of Phillips and Norman L. Arnett, Sr. of Crete; seven grandchildren, Janet Sue Lundholm, Melinda (Jim) Petrzilka, Norman L. Arnett, Jr., Jennifer (Bill) Dick, Michele Arnett, William Arnett and Laurie Arnett; and nine great-grandchildren.
