Funeral Services were held 9:30 A.M., Friday, February 26, 1988 at Higby Mortuary. Interment was held at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton, Iowa. OBITUARY: Helena Applegate Helena Mae Applegate, the daughter of Charles and Emma (Smith) Elliott, was born at Afton, Iowa, on December 2, 1893, and passed away at Aurora, Nebraska, on February 23, 1988, at the age of 94 years, 2 months and 21 days. She grew up and graduated from Afton High School and taught school at Afton. On August 17, 1917, she was united in marriage to Pearl “Pete” Applegate, at Afton, Iowa. They resided in Union County, Iowa until 1937, when they moved to Aurora. They resided in Aurora until 1950 when they moved back to Creston, Iowa. In 1976 they returned to Aurora, where she has since resided. Helena was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one infant daughter, Dorothy, and one great-grandson. Those who remain to cherish her memory are her 2 daughters, Marian Jones of Yakima, Washington and Betty Penner of Aurora. 2 grandsons, Keith and Gary Penner and 4 great-grandchildren all of Aurora; and 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
