Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Beth of Grand Island; three sons and one daughter-in-law, William Newberry of Kearney, Rodney Newberry of Georgia, Charles and Carolyn Newberry of Grand Island; one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Randy Stineman of Nelson, NE and a sister-in-law, Lela Newberry of Nampa, Idaho. Additional survivors include seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two aunts, Altha Hill of North Platte and Maxine Mann of Missouri and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Newberry grew up in McPherson County, where he attended school through the 10th grade; he then went to North Platte High School. Following his education, he stayed home to help his parents on the ranch. He received the nickname ‘Andy’ from the hired man while he was very young. His Aunt Ruby was the only one to call him Duane. Andy married Beth Dancer in April 1944. The couple lived on the ranch until the spring of 1945 when they moved to Hershey, NE to work for a farmer in that area. In the fall of 1946, they moved back to the Newberry ranch and lived there until 1956. He then moved his family to a farm he had purchased near Loup City where he farmed, ranched and milked cows. In 1961, he built one of the most modern Grade A Dairy barns in the Midwest, making headline news in the Nebraska Farmer. Due to falling milk prices, he sold the dairy herd in 1967 and converted the barn into a hog finishing building. He continued raising corn, alfalfa and a commercial cow herd. In 1978, the couple sold their farm and moved to Grand Island. Andy enjoyed retirement – he could now go fishing. He loved fishing and hunting. He put a camper on the pickup and fished in nearly every lake in Nebraska and some lakes in Kansas. He was even able to go salmon fishing in the Pacific Ocean. He raised his own wax worms for bait at his home in the basement. Andy and Beth enjoyed traveling for many years, including taking a cruise. Andy enjoyed visiting. He never knew a stranger; and everyone enjoyed visiting with him. He liked playing cribbage, cards and wrote daily in his diary. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Glen and step-father, Clarence Staples. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or Faith United Methodist Church.
