Frances T. Miller, 88, of Grand Island died Monday November 14, 2005, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be Monday at 10:00 A.M. at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Cheryl Lamb will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. The casket will be closed. Mrs. Miller was born January 13, 1917, at Fairmont, NE to Frank and Ella (Reel) Thompson. Survivors include a grandson, J. Douglas Miller of Tucson, AZ; a granddaughter, Pamela M. Wendell of Littleton, CO; three great-granddaughters; twin great-grandsons; a nephew, Emmett A. Blodgett of Denver; three nieces, Janet Frances Shannon of Studio City, CA, Mrs. Marcia Shakman of Canyon Country, CA, and Mrs. Karen Adamakis, of Las Vegas, NV; as well as grand nieces and nephews in California and Nevada. Frances graduated from Hastings High School in May 1934. She then attended the Grand Island Business College from September 1935 to July 1936, when she accepted employment with the Central Power Company of Grand Island. In February of 1938, she accepted a Civil Service appointment and started employment with the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, MD. On May 1, 1939, she began working for the U.S. Geological Survey, Dept. of the Interior, in Washington, DC. On May 1, 1940, she transferred with the Survey to Denver, CO. In August of 1942, she transferred to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Dept. of the Interior in Denver until November 30, 1956, when she resigned as secretary to the Regional Director. She was employed part-time with the Soil Conservation Service, Dept. of Agriculture, in Grand Island from August 1957 to July 1958. She then worked with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island from September 15, 1959 until her retirement on April 28, 1973, as Voluntary Services Officer. Frances married Bernard S. McCarthy on November 16, 1944, at Denver, CO. She married John S. Miller on January 5, 1957, at Denver. They made their home in Grand Island. Mr. Miller died on October 28, 1978. Mrs. Miller was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Chapter 1509 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, John S. Stewart VFW Auxiliary No. 1 Denver, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 53, Grand Island Woman’s Club and the Liederkranz. She formerly volunteered at the St. Francis Medical Center, American Red Cross Bloodmobile and her church. She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers Rolin R. and James C. Thompson; sisters, Mrs. Vera Jane Shannon, Erma Thompson and infant sister, Flora Thompson; her step-son, John Ross Miller and a nephew, Gerald Shannon.
