Rev. August W. Mommens, 87, of Worms, NE died Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at his home. Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. The Rev. Dr. Dan Molyneux, Rev. Robert Harms and Rev. Rodney Armon will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Rev. Mommens was born October 22, 1917, to William C. and Kathrine (Albers) Mommens at Tecumseh, NE. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Loraine Mommens of Worms; four sons and daughters-in-law, David and Donna Mommens of Columbia City, Ind., Paul and Madonna Mommens of Seward, John and Tina Mommens of Omaha and Timothy and Cynthia Mommens of Portage, Wisc.; seven daughters and five sons-in-law, Susan Rieken of St. Libory, Mary Swanstrom of Worms, Lois and Paul Koehler of Omaha, Ruth and Glen Rademacher of Omaha, Eunice Mommens-Schuman and Rob Schuman of Union, Maine; Naomi and Eric Franzen of Weston, MO and Esther and Joe Cloeter of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany; one sister, Vernabell Adams of Valley, NE and a sister-in-law, Betty Mommens of Waterloo, Iowa. Additional survivors include 37 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. Rev. Mommens grew up and attended school in Tecumseh graduating in 1936. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps until entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in February of 1941. He served as a Chaplain’s Assistant and was discharged in November of 1945. He married Loraine Stichweh on June 2, 1946, at Plymouth, NE. He entered the Lutheran Seminary in 1946 and was ordained in 1952 at McGregor, Iowa. The Rev. Mommens served numerous Missouri Synod Lutheran churches in Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Florida and Oregon. He served as chaplain at the Grand Island Veteran’s Home from 1972 to 1982. Following his retirement from the Veteran’s Home, he worked with Laborers for Christ for ten years. He was a member of VFW Post 6155 at Burwell, NE. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lizzie, Mary and Clara; two brothers, Wilbur and Melford; a son-in-law, James Rieken; a brother-in-law, Glen Adams; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
