LARSEN, Vaughn E.


Vaughn E. Larsen, 79, of Grand Island, died Friday, September 2, 2005 at the Wedgewood Care Center. Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. at Gollaher Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jay Vetter will officiate. Burial will be at the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Mr. Larsen was born on July 4, 1926 at Marquette to Harold & Ida (Danhauer) Larsen. Survivors of the immediate family include one daughter and son-in-law, Jean & Butch Bergholz of Lincoln; his twin sister, Vivian Alberts of Aurora; and one brother, Leland Larsen of Columbus. Additional survivors include three grandchildren, Brianna Bergholz, Randy Bergholz, and Rusty Bergholz all of Lincoln; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Larsen received his education in Marquette. He then moved to Chicago where he was a jockey and exercise boy for the Van Berg stables. During W.W. II, Mr. Larsen served in the Philippines. After he was honorably discharged from the military, he returned to Marquette where he farmed for 30 years. He married Colleen Schulling on September 20, 1958 in Columbus. He then worked for the Grand Island City Park Department. He was instrumental in installing the underground sprinkling systems in the city parks. He retired in 1991. Following his retirement, he worked as a groundskeeper at the United Veterans Club. Mr. Larsen was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, a life member of V.F.W. #1347, the American Legion, the Platte-Duetsche, Elks, and Eagles. He was preceded in death by his wife on September 2, 2003; by his parents, one brother, Darold Larsen; and two sisters, Phyllis Hartzell, and Donnice Jensen.
