Bertrand ‘Sandy’
Bertrand ‘Sandy’ Sanburg, 89, of Grand Island, died Thursday, August 4, 2005 at the Litzenberg Memorial Hospital in Central City, after a lengthy illness.
Graveside services will be on Monday at 11:00 A.M. at the Grand Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. and on Monday from 9:00 A.M. until service time at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Mr. Sanburg was born on January 7, 1916 at Edgar, Nebraska to Charles R. and Helen B. (Nitler) Sanburg.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Ruby of Grand Island; one son, Charles of Grand Island; one daughter, Margaret Moriarty of Grand Island; three sisters, Annie O’Brien, Mary Dot Hopkins, and Betty Gilbert all living in the Omaha area.
Additional survivors include 5 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
After his birth, Mr. Sanburg moved with his family to Shickly, Nebraska. He graduated from Shickly High School.
After his education, Mr. Sanburg was enrolled in a C.C.C. Camp near Hebron where he spent one year. After he fulfilled his tour of duty, he moved back to Shickly where he worked in a grocery store and learned the trade of a meat-cutter.
He married Ruby McBeth on July 30, 1936 at Geneva, Nebraska. They were married nearly 70 years.
Mr. Sanburg loved to read history books. He also coached baseball, and loved to box and fish.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Margaret Sanburg; a brother, Greg; and a great-granddaughter, Heather Moriarty.
