Marie L. Gonzales Memorial services for Marie L. Gonzales, 73, of Rapid City were held Monday, January 13 at 7 p.m. at Oshtem-Catron Funeral Home. Burial was in Valentine, Nebr. January 19. She died January 14, 1982 in a Rapid City care center where she had been living for two years. Mrs. Gonzales was born April 22, 1908, at Wood Lake, Neb. to Allen E. and Irene Bell Whetstone. After being graduated with honors from high school, she attended Chadron State College. She taught school for a while near Sparks, Neb., before taking post-graduate work in journalism in Valentine, Neb. She married Darrel M. Bishop at Madison, Neb., on May 4, 1929 and the couple lived in Norfolk, Neb., before moving to Valentine, where they operated a cleaning shop. The couple later moved to Buffalo, Wyo., Lusk, Wyo., and San Sidio, Calif., before her husband’s death in 1954. Mrs. Gonzales married Lupe Gonzales on April 5, 1956. She was a member of professional women’s and teachers organizations, the Zoology Association of San Diego, Calif., and the Humane Society. Survivors include three sisters, Mabel Martin and Mildred “Ma” Brown, both of Rapid City and Cecil Pope of Chula Vista, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; and a close companion, Marion Dilley of Rapid City. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers. A memorial has been established to the Heart Fund.
