Ruby Christina Schroeder, 87, of Grand Island, passed away Sunday April 3, 2005 at Wedgewood Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. William Voelker officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 P.M. at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends. Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice. Ruby was born October 1, 1917 in Grand Island, the daughter of Frank and Christina (Molt) Engel. She grew up on a farm south of Grand Island and attended District 77 School. Ruby received a Palmer Handwriting Certificate for her perfect handwriting. She received the Sacred Service of Confirmation in the Lutheran Faith on April 10, 1938 at St. Pauls English Lutheran Church in Grand Island and was united in marriage to LeRoy H. Schroeder on September 8, 1943 in St. Pauls English Lutheran Church. In the earlier years, they lived near Wood River, Kenesaw and Alda where they farmed. Ruby was a housewife and helped in the farming with her husband. In 1963 they moved to Grand Island where she worked at Leon Plastics and later was a drapery fabricator for Sears until her retirement. Ruby enjoyed sewing and knitting. She was also a member of Peace Lutheran Church and Grand Island Knit Club. Due to failing health she resided at Wedgewood Care Center from 2002 until her death. Survivors of her immediate family include one son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Rosie Schroeder of Kenesaw; two daughers and sons-in-law; Lewellyn and Richard Rehder and Loretta and Jonathan Catlett both of Grand Island. Also left to cherish her memory are nine grandchildren; Mike Schroeder of Juanita, Nebraska, Tim Schroeder of Des Moines, Iowa, Mitch Schroeder of Kenesaw, Troy Schroeder of Hastings, Brenda Kehler of Greeley, Nebraska, Crystal Rehnberg of Grand Island, Rhonda Fishell of Wood River, Jonathan Catlett of Grand Island and William Catlett of Lincoln. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Schultz and Ruth Engle in addition to several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death her husband LeRoy H. Schroeder on January 16, 2005 and her parents, three brothers, Elmer, Earl and Lester Engle and two sisters, Iola Bockmann Stump and Bernice Layher.
