MARTINEZ, Joseph F. ‘Freddy’


Joseph F. ‘Freddy’ Martinez, 73, of Grand Island, died Friday, April 1, 2005 at the St. Francis Medical Center. Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The Rev. Phil Flott will officiate. Burial will be at the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. rosary at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Mr. Martinez was born on March 2, 1932 in Grand Island to Jose and Natalia (Ramirez) Martinez. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Fefujio of Grand Island; seven sons and two daughters-in-law, Gilbert Martinez, Thomas & Debra Martinez, Michael Martinez, Tony & Kerry Martinez, Jose Martinez, Fernando Martinez, and Isaiah Martinez all of Grand Island; six daughters, Stella Caballero, Gloria DeLeon, Mary Ann Martinez, Veronica Martinez, and Natalia Martinez all of Grand Island, and Martha Martinez of North Carolina; three step-sons, Leo Lopez, Jamie Lopez, and Ray Lopez all of Grand Island; six step-daughters and sons-in-law, Antonia & Manuel Perez of Grand Island, Andrea Lopez of Columbus, Victoria Lopez and Irene Lopez of Grand Island, Rosa & Israel Montalvo of Crete, and Marlen & Alberto Burgos of Norfolk; one brother, Manual Martinez of Grand Island; three sisters, Isabelle Galvan of Grand Island, Jeraldine Pena of Denver, and Phyllis Moreno of Scottsbluff; and one step-sister, Chenco Rosas of Grand Island. Additional survivors include 56 grandchildren, and 39 great-grandchildren. Mr. Martinez received his education in Grand Island at St. Mary’s school. Following his education, he boxed in the Golden Gloves. Mr. Martinez served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from January 1951 until his discharge in February 1954. He married Belen Selva on July 17, 1954 in Grand Island. He worked for Wilson Concrete. Mr. Martinez was then employed for 23 years on a section crew for the Union Pacific Railroad. He married Fefujio Ramirez on May 20, 1983 in Grand Island. He loved to bowl and fish, and he enjoyed coaching softball and basketball teams. He was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Eagles Club. Mr. Martinez was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife in 1982; an infant son, Joseph; an infant daughter, Belen; one brother, Carmel Martinez; and one sister, Julia Melgoza.
