Evelyn B. Crews, 88 Evelyn B. Crews, age 88 of Guide Rock, Nebraska died Thursday, May 2, 2002 at the Village Manor Home in Lincoln, Nebraska. Funeral services were held May 6, 2002 at the Simonson-Williams Funeral Home, 241 W. 4th Ave., Red Cloud with the Rev. Richard Fairbanks officiating. Interment was in the Prairie Union Cemetery at Shubert, Nebraska. The daughter of Lewis and Bertha (Whetstone) Hutchison, she was born September 9, 1913 at Sparks, Nebraska. She was the youngest child, and her brothers and sisters were Ervin, Ruth, Edith and Ralph. She moved with her parents to a farm near the Rocky Ford School along the Niobrara River east of Valentine. She attended the Valentine school and then went to work at the Valentine Hospital. Her duties at the hospital were numerous. She helped clean, take food to the patients, and helped with the laundry. She then moved to Portland, Oregon and worked in the shipyards as a welder. She worked at this job for two years during World War II. She returned to Nebraska and enrolled in the Grand Island Beauty School, graduating in 1945. Her first beauty shop was in Ord, Nebraska. She opened another shop in Valentine, and then sold both businesses and started a shop in Burwell, where she worked for 17 years. She married Donald W. Crews and they moved to Guide Rock in 1959. He died on April 15, 1979. In 2000, she moved to Lincoln to live. She was a member of the Guide Rock United Methodist Church; Order of Eastern Star; Rebekah Lodge and Royal Neighbors at Guide Rock. Preceding her in death were a sister, Edith Hutchison Reyman, and brothers Ervin and Ralph Hutchison. Surviving are a sister Ruth Stone of California; nieces and nephews: Bruce Reyman of Wood Lake, Nebraska; Claude Reyman of Lincoln, Nebraska; Leah Rae Jaccard of Bend, Oregon; Janice McThorn, James Hutchison of California; Dennis Hutchison of California; great nieces and nephews: Gina and Dana Reyman of North Carolina; Lynda Snyder of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; Douglas Story of Washington; Suzanne Kirzy of Oregon; Lisa McThorn of California; Jamie and James Hutchison of California and many friends. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
