MACKLIN, Homer


Homer Macklin, 80 years of age from Minden, NE died on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Kearney County Health Services-Hospital shortly after being admitted. Homer was born in Riverton, NE on May 6, 1931 to Charles and Anna (Berlie) Macklin. They moved to the Minden area and Homer graduated from Minden High School in 1949 where he was on the football and basketball teams. Homer served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 until 1953. He returned to the Minden area and was the manager of Friends Motor in Minden for 35 years. In 1953 he married Peggy Bos. Homer later married Marilyn Anderson on December 15, 1960. On March 17, 2005 he married Marlene Onwiler Shearer. Homer was a member of the United Methodist Church in Minden. Homer had a passion for racing. In his early years he drove racecars and then he became the “Head Wrench” on the crew of “Mighty Mouse”. Home was proud to have had two of his cars displayed at the Knoxville Sprint Car Racing Hall of Fame. He was notified last week that he will be inducted into the Nebraska Racing Hall of Fame. He was a fix-it man and would tinker in his shop for many hours. He was a collector of parking meters and a huge Nebraska Football fan. Memorials are suggested in his memory to the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife, Marlene of Minden; three children, Tracy Johnson of Denver, CO, Scott Peterson and his wife, Deb of Elkhorn, NE and Shane Macklin of Sioux Falls, SD; two step-children, Penny Talbert and her husband, Matt of Minden and Rob Shearer of Minden; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Nancy Lambert officiating. Burial of his ashes will be in the Minden Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Minden American Legion, Heartwell VFW and the Nebraska Military Detail Team. There will be no visitation. Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden is in charge of arrangements.
