MANCHESTER, Evert S.


Evert S. Manchester, 91 years of age from Minden, Nebraska died on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Evert was born on May 5, 1919 in North Loup, Nebraska to John and Lula (Jackman) Manchester. He grew up in the North Loup area and graduated from North Loup High School. He attended Kearney State Teachers College. In 1940 he joined the National Guard. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was discharged in 1945. He was a long time member of the American Legion and served on the Color Guard. He was also a member of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden. On September 14, 1947, he married Ethel Ehlers. They lived in Grand Island, moved to Hastings in 1951 and then in 1953 moved to Minden. Evert delivered fuel in the Minden area then owned and operated the Mobil Service station in Minden. He also was a substitute rural US Mail carrier for many years. Evert enjoyed dancing, Nebraska Football and playing golf. He cherished his time with his family and loved sharing a good story with others. A memorial fund has been established in his name. Survivors include three daughters, Jody Fitzsimmons and her husband, Mike, of Minden, Marci Smith and her husband, Clark, of Lincoln and Jan Vondenkamp and her husband, Mark, of Elk River, MN; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren and one sister, Grace Mulligan, of North Loup. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, one sister, and one brother. Memorial services will be on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden with Don Canady officiating. Burial will be prior to the memorial service at the Minden Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. with the family present from 4-5 p.m.
