LONG, Elnor Lorraine

Elnor Lorraine Long, 96, of Minden, formerly of Eddyville, NE, died Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Long Term Care Unit of Kearney County Health Services in Minden. Elnor was born on August 23, 1914, on a farm south of Eddyville, NE, to Milton Albert and Gertrude (Williams) Summers. When Elnor was eleven her mother died. She attended rural school in Dawson County and graduated from Lexington High School in 1931. Elnor then taught in rural Dawson County Schools. On December 26, 1934, she married Jule H. Long in Lexington, Nebraska. In 1949, Elnor stated working at the Eddyville post office as a part time clerk. She became a full time clerk in 1952 and July 1, 1973, she became Post Master until her retirement in 1983. Jule and Elnor moved to Minden in 1984, to be near their children. Jule died in 1991. Survivors include, son, Robert Long; daughter, Karen Vitera and her husband, Robert all of Minden; four grandchildren, Lorraine Swanson and her husband, J. Toger of Bellevue, Valerie Wentworth and her husband, David of Omaha, Rob Vitera and his wife, Laura of LaVista and Dave Vitera and his wife, Debbie of Grand Island; eleven great grandchildren, Rachel Swanson of Chicago, Audrey Swanson of Lincoln, Evan and Lindsay Swanson of Bellevue, Jessica and Tiffany Wentworth of Omaha, Lillian and Robert (R. J.) Vitera of LaVista, and Brianna, Ryan and Mitchell Vitera of Grand Island. In addition to her husband, her sister, Ellen L. McClure, precedes her in death. Private family services were held. Burial was in the Minden Cemetery. Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden was in charge of arrangements.
