William N. Boyd of Grand Island, died Saturday, February 26, 2005 in Henderson, Nevada after a short illness. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 4, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Gollaher Chapel with Rev. Richard Karohl officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 P.M. at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with the family present to receive friends from 5-7 P.M. Memorials are suggested to the Heartland Event Center or Faith United Methodist Church.
Bill was born July 29, 1921 in Central City, Nebraska to Cecil and LaVonne (Barnum) Boyd. He grew up in Central City and graduated from Central City High School in 1940.
Bill served in the Air Force from December of 1941 to September 1945. During his service in the South Pacific he received two Distinguished Flying Crosses and two Air Metals. He moved to Grand Island following the war and was married to Arlene Swearingen on December 16, 1945 and resided and raised four daughters here. He worked for the Keebler Company for 30 years. After his retirement from Keebler he worked several part time jobs including selling real estate, Skagway and Wanek Pharmacy.
Bill a member of Faith United Methodist Church and was an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox, Husker Football, Grand Island Sr. High Athletics, golf, fishing and horse racing at Fonner Park.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Arlene, four daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Keith Jardine of Grand Island, Deb and Rob Heimbuch of Henderson, Nevada, Terri and Gary Buchanan of Lincoln and Sherri and Dave Bergholz of Grand Island, one sister, Bonnie Cahelo of Maitland, Florida and one brother, Gene Boyd of Modesto, California. Also left to cherish his memory are 9 grandchildren and their spouses; Shelly and Russ Harvey, Steve and Deb Jardine, Jill and Troy Moser, Jennifer and Phil Ellis, David and Rebecca Heimbuch, Chad and Sara Bergholz, Matt and Mandi Bergholz, Maggi and Joel Wiegert, and Molli Buchanan and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Leslie and sisters Maxine Dobb and Barbara Hahn.
