Walter R. Werner, 95, of Omaha, formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday January 25, 2005 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 29, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. in the chapel of Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with Rev. David Zellmer officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4-8 P.M. on Friday with the family present to greet friends. Memorials may be directed to the family for future determination. Mr. Werner was born December 18, 1909 in Doniphan to Nick and Rose (Gulzow) Werner. He attended school in Doniphan and District 40 and Doniphan High School. He was united in marriage to Mabel Boltz on June 16, 1932. Mr. Werner and his wife farmed the Doniphan area and southwest of Grand Island until 1961. They then moved to Grand Island. While there he worked for the Hall County Highway Dept. He retired in 1975 and moved to Johnson Lake in Elwood, Nebraska. In 1982, they moved back to Grand Island. They had been married for 72 years. Mr. Werner was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church was the oldest living past president of the Platt-Duetsche Society. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, playing cards and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife Mabel, a son and daughter-in-law Larry and Judy Werner of Omaha. Also left to cherish is memory are four grandchildren; Richard Werner of Lincoln, Renee (Werner) Schriever, Craig Werner and Nicole (Werner) Darnold all of Omaha and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law Walter Jr. and Mary (Allison) Werner, a brother Don Werner and a sister, Margaret Reher and his parents.
