Gregory S. O’Rourke, 86, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 20, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at the St. Leo’s Catholic Church with Rev. Jack Rademacher officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 P.M. at the funeral home with rosary recited at 7:00 P.M. Friday evening.
Mr. O’Rourke was born January 21, 1918 in Mobile, Alabama the son of Michael and May (Stockman) O’Rourke. He graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile in 1936 and Spring Hill College in 1939. He also attended Georgetown University for a time before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps on July 23, 1942 and was discharged on January 25, 1946. He was stationed in the Philippines and Japan.
On October 23, 1943 he married Audrey Wolfe at St. Mary’s Rectory in Grand Island and they lived in Mobile after his discharge until coming to Grand Island in 1946. He began working for his father-in-law at Wolfe’s Hardware. In January of 1953, he started working for the U.S. Post Office and retired in January of 1978.
He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church and NARFE.
Survivors include his wife Audrey and six children; Maureen Pearson and her husband Stan of McCook, Nebraska, Sheila Gleason of Bridgeport, Nebraska, Dennis and his wife Sherryl O’Rourke Yankton, South Dakota, Peggy Zlomke and her husband John of McCook, Kevin and his wife Mary O’Rourke of Hastings and Erin Brady and her husband Richard of San Diego, California. He is also survived by a sister, Jean Martin of Huron, South Dakota.
Also left to cherish his memory are 14 grand children and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
