Roland R. Newman, 69, of Grand Island died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Pine Valley Resort at Long Pine, Nebraska from a heart attack. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A. M. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don O’Brien will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M. Sunday with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Newman was born on April 20, 1935 at North Loup Nebraska to Henry and Martha (Kosmicki) Newman. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife Jolene of Grand Island; one son and daughter-in-law, Rocky & Dana Newman of Grand Island; three daughters and son-in-law, Micki Robinson of Grand Island, Gina Evans of Denver, Colorado, and Heidi & Rick Magana of Grand Island; two brothers, D.C. Newman of Glenwood, Iowa, and Henry Newman of Kearney; three sisters, Carolyn Townsend of Henderson, Nevada, Dusty Smith of Jacksonville, Florida, and Cathy Newman-Hines of Austin, Texas. Additional survivors include 10 grandchildren, Chance, Catelyn & Callie Newman, Nicole & Shayla Otero, Valerie & Vanessa Evans, and Molly, Marty, and Matt Magana. Mr. Newman received his education at North Loup and Scotia. He married Jolene Rogers on May 18, 1956 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Mr. Newman was employed as a construction superintendent for Diamond Engineering for 40 years. He was currently owner/operator of Newman Excavating. He loved the out-of-doors, and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Newman was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Eagles, Platte-Duetsche, the Saddle Club, and Alcoholics Anonymous. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Kenny Newman, and one sister Henrietta Wegerzyn. Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
