Marian L. Martin, 84, of Grand Island, died Saturday evening, June 12, 2004 at her home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6-8 P.M. with the family present to greet friends. Mrs. Martin was born July 2, 1919 in Lincoln, the daughter of Hal J. and Gracie (Skiles) Bowers. She grew up in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1937. She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln graduating in 1941. She was united in marriage to Butch Luther from 1941 until his death in 1945 while serving with the 10th Mountain Division during WWII. She later married George Martin on January 3, 1947. The couple lived in Grand Island the rest of their lives. Mr. Martin established O.P. Skaggs Supermarket which is now known as Skagway. Mrs. Martin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was very active in swimming, golfing, dancing, bowling and loved to travel with her husband George. Survivors include a son Bill Martin and his wife Raynette of Grand Island and a daughter Mary Herring and her husband Ben of Ft. Worth, Texas. Also left to cherish her memory are six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her husband in 2001 and two children, Robert and Jane Martin, preceded her in death.
