Avis A. Forbes, 83, of Grand Island died Monday, May 03, 2004, at the St. Francis Skilled Nursing Unit. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Cheryl Lamb will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Mrs. Forbes was born April 5, 1921, at Campbell County, Wyoming to Floyd and Gertie (Springen) Riegel. Immediate survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Connie Kruse of St. Paul, Neb., Gary Kruse of Ottumwa, Iowa, Jim and Ann Forbes of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Sandy Hines of Lake McConaughy, Neb. and Roxie Hawkes of Grand Island. Additional survivors include ten grandchildren, Jamie, Cory, Wendy, and Ben Kruse, Kelly Andreasen, Kim Leiphart, Jenny Rienholt, Tim Hawkes, James Forbes III and William Odom; and 14 great-grandchildren. Avis moved with her family to Nebraska in 1921 and grew up on a farm near Fullerton. She graduated from Fullerton High School in 1938. She later attended Capital Beauty School in Omaha graduating in 1942. She married Otis Kruse in 1943. She later married James Forbes in 1950. Avis enjoyed bird watching, gardening and flying with her son. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans and blankets for church charities. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church for 53 years and was an active member in the church sewing circle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Forbes, Sr.; one brother, Kenneth Anderson and one sister, Lucille Gaddis. Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
