H. Elaine Turnquist, 80, of Axtell, passed away at Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege on October 7th, 2010. Memorial services will be Monday, Oct. 11th at 10:00 am at Zion Chapel on the Bethphage Campus in Axtell with Pastor John Gosswein officiating. A private family burial at the Bethphage Cemetery will precede the service. Visitation will be at the Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden on Sunday, Oct. 10th from 3-5 pm and 7��"8 pm, with family greeting from 3��"4 pm. Elaine was born on November 7, 1929 in Wakefield, Nebraska to Levi and Ada (Lundberg) Dahlgren, the oldest of two daughters. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield, but knew without at doubt, that it was her acceptance of Jesus Christ as her personal Savior when she was a teenager that assured her a home in Heaven today and for eternity. She graduated from Wakefield High School and Luther College in Wahoo. She attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she met her husband, Bob. She taught school in Genoa, Ne. and served as parish worker and organist in Cambridge, Minnesota. On October 18, 1952 she married Robert A Turnquist. To this union five daughters were born. Elaine was an accomplished pianist and organist and played regularly for church services at Trinity and Zion Lutheran Churches in Axtell for over 50 years. She was accompanist for The Messiah and Master Singers, but her greatest pleasure came in being an integral part of the Kingdom Party worship services each week for the residents of Bethphage Mission. She was a member of the Axtell Federated Women's Club and Holdrege Tre Kroner Scandinavian Society. One of the most important activities in Elaine's life was coordinating, hosting and guiding Stonecroft Friendship Bible Coffees. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Turnquist, on 09/09/1999. Survivors include her five daughters: Mary (Richard) Anderson, Funk; Ruth (Monte) Sheffield, Wallace; Janet (Michael) Cavanaugh, Minden; Karla (Darry) Axtell, Funk; Beth (Bradley) Allmand, Holdrege; fifteen Grandchildren: Timothy Anderson, Holdrege; Matthew (Wendy) Sheffield, Gretna; Wendi (Mike) Hadley, Holdrege; Mollie (Adam) Akerson, Omaha; Larry Cavanaugh, serving in Afghanistan; Melissa (Evan) Fagen, Granite Falls, MN; Justin Cavanaugh, Overland Park, KS; Baron (Kerri) Axtell, Funk; Erick Axtell, Adam Axtell, Kearney; Haley (Kyle) Heineman, Lexington; Sydney Axtell, Lincoln; Bronwyn Allmand, Denver CO; Robert and Annie Allmand, Holdrege; 10 great-grandchildren; Lainey, Sophie, Sawyer, Connor, Addison, Gunnar, Paige, Cade, Aldyn and Emerson and her sister and brother in law, Leola and Don Eberspacher, Milford. Family suggests memorials to Mosaic at Bethphage Village, Axtell or Trinity Lutheran Church, Axtell.
