Sylvia I. Kirby, 99, of the Grand Island Veteran’s Home died Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the home. Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ord, Nebraska. Pastor Russell Barelmann will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 P.M. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Mrs. Kirby was born August 1, 1904, on a farm northeast of Ord, Nebraska to John and Emma (Vavra) Beranek. She grew up on the farm and attended the Elm Creek School. Sylvia married William E. Stewart on September 5, 1924. The couple farmed until Mr. Stewart’s death on March 5, 1933. She and her sons then lived in Ord, Nebraska. Sylvia married Ernest Kirby on November 27, 1950. She worked as a photoengraver for the Ord Quiz for several years and had various other jobs. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ord. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lores (Stew) and Marian Stewart of Creston, Iowa and daughters-in-law, Donna Stewart of Grand Island, Roberta Stewart of Cozad and Hilda Stewart of Lincoln; 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands; three sons, Floyd, Alwin and Lyle Stewart; three brothers; one sister and two grandsons.
