Erna M. Schwartz, 87, of Grand Island died Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, April 2, 2004, with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Dan Heuer will officiate. Committal rites will be held at a later date at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Mrs. Schwartz was born May 7, 1916, at Grand Island to Herman and Lena (Werner) Florke. She attended school in Hall County, Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1933. Following her education, she worked at home on the farm and did housework. She married Richard G. Schwartz on January 31, 1942, at Grant, Nebraska. Erna worked for three years at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. She then worked as a nurse’s aide for Dr. John Anderson and at Lutheran Hospital for 25 years until retiring in 1984. She enjoyed gardening, canning and sewing. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Survivors of the immediate family are her daughter, Carole Alloway of Hastings; her son and daughter-in-law, Erick and Donna Schwartz of Grand Island; and her sister Elsie Petersen of Grand Island. Additional survivors include grandchildren, Michael and Michele Lentz, Carri and Fred Frank, Ma’chelle and Philip Janssen, Brian and Teresa Schwartz, Sandi and Larry Schmidt and Steve and Sonya Schwartz; great-grandchildren, Amanda Kucera, Bradford Frank, Dawn Schwartz, Sean Schwartz, Sam Schwartz, Weston Schmidt, Cooper Schmidt and Sayler Renee Schwartz; and great-great-grandson, Gavin Schwartz. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Duane; brother, Harry Florke and sister, Irene Tibbs. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
