Mildred Ann Rock, age 91, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Funeral services will be at 10 A.M. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Francis T. Curran will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Rock was born March 13, 1912, at Dodge, Nebraska to James J. and Anastacia (Misek) Miller. She grew up the Dodge area as a small child and then moved with her family to Elba, Nebraska where her father ran the local creamery. Mildred received her education in Elba. She married Maurice Rock at St. Libory, Nebraska. Mildred lived in Grand Island and worked as a clerk for Montgomery Ward, she later worked for Billon's Eye Care Center and then sold insurance for Midwest Life Insurance. Mildred moved to Omaha where she worked as bookkeeper for Eveready Construction, a paving contractor from 1956 until retiring in 1989 at the age of 76. She enjoyed doing yard work and tending to her flowers. She was known as "the flower lady" in her neighborhood. She loved to quilt and made quilts for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (18) Mildred enjoyed people, especially children. She would "adopt" area kids who had lost their grandparents. She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Church in Omaha. She did all of the floral landscaping around the church up until the last few years. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Margie Rock of Grand Island, five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
