WHETSTONE,
Allen E.
Allen E. Whetstone
Allen E. Whetstone was born at Beloit, Illinois, October 13, 1860 and died Sunday May 14, 1944 at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 29 days at Chadron, Nebraska.
When a small boy the family moved to Kansas, which at that time was a pioneer state. A few years later they moved to Tarkio, Missouri. It was there that he first met Miss Rena Belle Crandal, whom he later married January 5, 1883.
Their early married life was spent as farmers in south eastern Nebraska. Then they migrated to a homestead in Dawes County, Nebraska. During the time spent there, they met with many experiences and hardships so typical of pioneer life.
Later they returned to Cherry County and spent the greater part of their lives in and around Cherry and Brown Counties.
In their declining years they moved to Chadron to be near their children.
The home was blessed with ten children, seven daughters and three sons, five of whom preceded him in death.
Mr. Whetstone lived a very useful life and will be greatly missed by his many friends, with whom he associated from day to day. He was a lover of nature and throughout his life had lived close to the soil.
For the past several years his sight and hearing has been so affected that he could neither read nor enjoy the radio, so he spent his time out of doors working with trees and shrubs and walking for hours every day.
His love and companionship to his wife and family will never be forgotten.
His wishes were that he be laid to rest where he had spent the richer part of his life.
Those left to mourn his death are: his wife, and his daughters, Mrs. Jenny Grady of Valentine; Mrs. Mabel Martin of Rapid City, S.D.; Mrs. Mildred Brown of Rapid City, S.D.; Mrs. Marie Bishop of Lusk, Wyoming; Mrs. Cecil Pope of Chadron, Nebraska; 5 sons-in-law; 9 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the Wilkinson funeral home by Rev. H. T. Slagg on Wednesday, May 17th. Interment was in Mount Hope cemetery.
