Helen was born on July 8, 1921, in Ponca, NE, to Dennis and Helen (Carpenter) Heenan. She was raised along with her three brothers and four sisters on a farm in the Willis, NE area in her early years. Later, the family moved to South Sioux City, where Helen graduated from high school.
