Kenneth Long

Kenneth Long, 92, formerly of Hubbard, NE died on March 12, 2015. Kenneth had many relatives and friends who live in Dakota County and the Sioux City area. Mass of Christian Burial was held on March 18,2015, at the Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest, IL.
Kenneth was born in Council Bluffs, IA on July 19, 1922, the son of Benedict and Rose (Hartnett) Long. He was the eldest of eight children. He grew up in Hubbard, NE where the family lived until moving to Washington, DC in 1941. He graduated from South Sioux City High School.
Mr. Long enlisted in the army shortly after the start of WWII. He was assigned to the Corps of Engineers. He received a commission of First Lt. and was assigned to the Pacific theater where he served as a construction and maintenance officer on the Philippine Island of Luzon. He met Margie on Luzon and became engaged.
Kenneth graduated from Marquette University in 1950. He and Margie moved to her hometown of Ironwood, Michigan and raised their nine children while he was employed as the City Manager/City Engineer. In the 1980s they moved to Lake Bluff, IL where he retired. His cherished wife Margie was tragically taken by cancer in 1982. He was fortunate to find love again and wed Mary Bergland in 1985.
Ken developed a deep interest in the genealogy and history of his family. He and Mary spent many a journey searching out and researching records. The fruit of his labors is a book of the Long Family History which is registered in The Library of Congress.
Kenneth is survived by his beloved wife Mary (Bergland); nine children, Rosemary, Theresa Rogers (Chris), Richard (the late Gail), Kathleen Narrigan (Bill), Maureen, Gregory, Steven (Isabel), Jane Sprenne (Eric) and Daniel.
Mr. Long was preceded in death by his parents, Benedict and Rose Long; beloved wife Margaret (Wilcheck); two sisters, Mona Jean Luenser (Kurt) and Eleanor Hoch (Arthur); and three brothers, Thomas (Dorothy) and Gerald.
