Birth: Nov. 1, 1826, Germany Death: Mar. 22, 1920 Bow Valley Cedar County Nebraska, USA Cedar County News, NE, Wednesday, March 24, 1922 JOHN TIGGES, SR., DEAD VENERABLE CITIZEN HAD ATTAINED HIS 93RD YEAR BEFORE SUMMONS CAME John Tigges Sr., probably the oldest man in Cedar county, passed away Tuesday morning at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Joseph Bonertz, at Bow Valley, aged 92 years and five months. Mr. Tigges was born in Burberke, Westphalia, Germany, on Nov. 1, 1826. Accompanied by his wife and family, he emigrated to America and on Sept. 4, 1871 settled in Cedar county, which was then being changed from a wilderness into pioneer settlements. Mr. Tigges took up the work of the home making pioneer and always carried his share of the burden. Quiet and unassuming he possessed to a marked degree to better his condition and that of his family, while devoting his talents to that end, he was always ready to give assistance when it was needed. He was saddened a few years after his arrival by the death of his wife, since which time he has made his home with his son and grand children. For several years he has made his home with his granddaughter, Mrs. Bonertz. He is survived by one son, John Tigges of Fordyce, nine grand-children and four great grand-children. |
